چکیده

In many countries breath-alcohol testing is a well established method to control driving under the influence of alcohol. Various analytical principles are used to measure the alcohol concentration in expired breath, such as gas chromatography, electrochemical cells, semiconductors, and infrared spectrometry. A breath-alcohol analyzer based on the last method was demonstrated at the last meeting, the 8th International Conference on Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety in Stockholm by Grambow et al. (1981), named the Alcotest 7010 (Dragerwerk AG, Ltibeck, Germany).

Non-(13)CO2 targeted breath tests: a feasibility study.

Breath tests allow a non-invasive and fast diagnostic of different specific enzymes' phenotypic functionality. Over the last decade several 13C-breath tests were successfully tested, with the (13)C-urea breath test being approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA). The use of other targets than labeled (13)CO2 in exhaled breath offers additional...

Breath Ketone Testing: A New Biomarker for Diagnosis and Therapeutic Monitoring of Diabetic Ketosis

BACKGROUND Acetone, β -hydroxybutyric acid, and acetoacetic acid are three types of ketone body that may be found in the breath, blood, and urine. Detecting altered concentrations of ketones in the breath, blood, and urine is crucial for the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic ketosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the advantages of different detection methods for ketones, and to establ...

Ph . D . Paradigm Shift for the Alcohol Breath Test

The alcohol breath test (ABT) has been used for quantification of ethyl alcohol in individuals suspected of driving under the influence for more than 50 years. In this time, there has been little change in the concepts underlying this single breath test. The old model, which assumes that end-exhaled breath alcohol concentration is closely related to alveolar air alcohol concentration, is no lon...

Acetone, ammonia and hydrogen cyanide in exhaled breath of several volunteers aged 4-83 years.

Original on-line measurements of acetone, ammonia and hydrogen cyanide in the exhaled breath of several volunteers within the age ranges 4-6 years and 60-83 years are reported and compared with previous data on volunteer cohorts covering ages 17-18 years and 20-60 years. The compiled data show that a significant statistical increase in breath ammonia occurs with increasing age, but that acetone...

Is breath acetone a biomarker of diabetes? A historical review on breath acetone measurements.

Since the ancient discovery of the 'sweet odor' in human breath gas, pursuits of the breath analysis-based disease diagnostics have never stopped. Actually, the 'smell' of the breath, as one of three key disease diagnostic techniques, has been used in Eastern-Medicine for more than three thousand years. With advancement of measuring technologies in sensitivity and selectivity, more specific bre...
